Hybrid Cars

The hybrid car can run on electricity, gasoline, or both. The hybrid gasoline engine is assisted by electric motors. This unique design incorporates electric motors placed in the transmission of the vehicle. As the vehicle comes to a stop the gasoline engine is turned off by the hybrid controller or computer may be another term used to describe the controller. By turning the gasoline engine off when stopped the fuel consumption is reduced. As the vehicle accelerates from a stop the controller starts the gasoline engine and the electric motors assist by adding torque and horse power to the gasoline engine. The additional horse power from the electric motors reduces fuel consumption for the gasoline engine.

The electric motors receive their voltage from a battery pack. The battery pack is made up of several cells wired together and uses transformers and capacitors to convert low DC voltage into high AC current or electricity to run the electric motors. The high voltage leads are all ran in orange colored wire. The orange color coded wire insures that the technician knows to use special safety equipment when handling these wires.   The battery pack is charged by the electric motors. When the vehicle is decelerating or stopped the motors are no longer producing torque, they are producing charging current to keep the battery pack fully charged.

The hybrid controller also controls the braking of the vehicle. The electric motor is used to slow the vehicle down when the brakes are applied. Because the motors are only connect to the drive wheels usually located in the front of the vehicle they are the only ones being slowed down by motors . The rear brakes do not have a motor unless the vehicle is four wheel drive, so the hydraulic brakes are always used to stop the rear wheels and they are controlled by the controller. When force is applied to the brake pedal, the force is calculated by the controller and the controller determines the rate of stopping distance.   If the force is extreme the controller will over ride the use of the motors to bring the vehicle to a stop by applying the hydraulic brake brakes to all wheels. The ABS system is part of the brake system and plays a part in preventing skids. The controller controls the ABS module or computer.

Main-te-nance

  1. continuing repair work: work that is done regularly to keep a machine, building, or piece of equipment in good condition and working order
  2. condition: working order
  3. maintaining of something: the continuation or preservation of something

The filter above is an air filter designed to keep continuation from entering the engines air intake system. As you can this filter is extremely dirty. Maintenance of the filter has not been performed until now. When a filter gets this dirty bad things begin to happen. The fuel mileage drops off, the engine searches for alternative sources to draw air into the engine, and the engine performance suffers. The crankcase ventilation system is one alternative source for the engine to draw air from. When it pulls from this area of the engine it brings with it engine oil. The oil is mixed with the air / fuel mixture in the combustion chamber and causes damage to the spark plugs and emissions system.

Auto Repair and Service

Auto Repair and Service means a lot to the consumer in this fast pace world we live in. Being without transportation is an inconvenience while the vehicle is being repaired. Finding someone to follow you to the shop and give you a ride home. Wondering how much it's going to cost for the service. With all this in mind we consumers want a repair shop that is well kept and clean. The personnel are polite and ethical. The technicians are certified and experienced. Most of all we expect to get our vehicle back fixed and in a timely manner.

How do we decide who to take our car to when it requires service. A recommendation from a friend or family member is the best choice. They have already experienced the service and built a trust with this provider. If you are new to an area you can contact the Chamber of Commerce, check them out with the BBB (Better Business Bureau), or use the different social medias for information. Check out the service providers web site and see what they have to offer.

What types of service do they offer. Are they going to be able to do all your required service at one location or do they specialize in a certain area. Do they offer service in all of the following areas. Engine repair, engine performance, suspension, steering, brakes, exhaust, HVAC, electrical, electronic systems, drive train, axles, and transmissions. Are the technicians certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE). A shop that offers everything is going to be convenience for you.

As you approach this new to you service provider do a mental check list. Is the parking lot neat and clean. Is the office and waiting area clean. Are the office personnel polite and welcome you. Is the shop area clean and neat. Are the technicians polite and dressed appropriately. On the other hand is the parking full of what appears to be junk. Is the office cluttered and smells like dirty oil. Did the office personal make you feel uneasy. Does the shop area look like a grease pit with clutter everywhere. Do the mechanics look like they needed a shower and clean cloths. If so, you may want to look for another shop.
