A Few Facts About Infiniti

Infiniti is the luxury of premium division of Nissan Motor Company and was founded in 1989, around the same time as its Japanese rivals Honda and Toyota also introduced luxury brands as a result of changes in export restrictions.

Despite being a Japanese product, the brand Infiniti is not used in Japan and the select Infiniti models that are sold in Japan are marketed as Nissans.

Unfortunately the first model, the Q45, was a bit of a flop as a result of poor marketing and an appearance that didn’t match up to all of the luxury features the vehicle actually possessed.

Throughout the 1990’s Infiniti sales lagged behind their competition because of a poor marketing campaign that featured an emphasis on nature, not showing the actual cars and design choices opting out of wood and chrome accents. Some buyers went as far as to alter their vehicles by installing faux (imitation) wood appliques (fabric pieces).

Instead of abandoning the line in 2000, like predicted, Nissan announced that they were revamping Infiniti. They strove to make Infiniti the “Japanese BMW”. Their dedication paid off and sales improved.

In 2010 Infiniti launched a new performance division; this may have had a negative effect as sales fell in 2011 and their sales fall short of their rivals Acura and Lexus among women.

Perhaps somewhat behind other car manufacturers, Infiniti finally introduced a hybrid sedan in 2010.

From 1996-2002 the Infiniti brand was part of the Indy Racing League with only a few wins to its name.

In 2011 Infiniti chose to enter the Formula One circuit by sponsoring the Renault engines for Red Bull Racing.
