A Few Facts About Audi

Audi was founded in 1909 by August Horch after he was forced out of the company he had formed 20 years earlier. The name stems from Horch being unable to use his name due to a court decision giving sole rights to his former company (as he had named it after himself). The German word Horch translates to “hear”, so he adopted the Latin term Audi which translates as “to listen”.

In 1921 Audi became the first German car manufacturer to present a production car with left-handed drive.

Starting in 1928, Audi underwent several decades of mergers, buyouts and splits finally resulting in it becoming a part of the German car manufacturing powerhouse known as the Volkswagen Group.

The first merger consisted of four companies including Audi; this is the origin of Audi’s logo which is made up of four interlocking rings.

Audi is known for its production of 100% galvanized cars, specially designed to prevent corrosion. Bodies with a full zinc coating to prevent rust and other measures resulting in increased durability have caused the manufacturer to issue a lengthy 12 year warranty against corrosion.

Also resistant to corrosion and rust are Audi’s Space Frame designs, vehicles that use a uniquely designed aluminum frame instead of traditional steel. This creates a lighter car, but can be expensive to repair.

Unlike Mercedes-Benz and BMW, arguably its biggest competition, Audi has been very adamant about not adopting rear-wheel drive. The majority of Audi vehicles in fact come with all-wheel drive in the standard package, a feature usually classified as optional by its rivals.

Audi prides itself on being a leader of technology within its field, offering Fuel Stratified Injection engines to save fuel, LED daytime running lights, a multimedia interface to control in car entertainment, temperature and other features and its own section on PlayStation Home which includes a driving video game.
