A Few Facts About Jaguar

Jaguar is known as a British luxury car company owned by Indian company Tata Motors, specifically part of their Jaguar Land Rover division.

The company was originally founded in 1922 as the Swallow Sidecar Company, producing motorcycle sidecars and eventually passenger cars. The company changed its name to Jaguar Cars Ltd. in 1945 as there was negativity associated with the initials “SS” after the Second World War.

The XK120 sports car of 1948 marked two very important milestones, it was part of the first set of postwar models the company produced and it launched the company’s foray into sports cars which would become their signature.

From the 1950’s through 2004, Jaguar had a dominating presence in the motorsport world with many successes. However, 2004 marked the end of the company’s official presence due to financial strain.

For many years, Jaguar has manufactured cars for the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and is one of a select group of companies allowed to publically state the patronage of both HM Queen Elizabeth II and HRH Prince Charles. They are not allowed to specify any details regarding the vehicles made or how much they were purchased for, just that an association exists.

Jaguar was an independent company until it merged with the British Motor Corporation in 1968. After a handful of changes of name and ownership of the British Motor Company, Jaguar was purchased by the Ford Motor Company in 1989. In 2000, Ford purchased Land Rover and integrated the two companies. The merging remained in place through the sale to Tata Motors in 2008 as they were sold together and remain the same division.
